Treatment for neck and back injuries can vary. Some injuries can be remedied using simple over-the-counter medications, while more serious back and neck injuries may require major life altering surgery. Suffering a catastrophic injury of this sort most certainly leads to extensive pain and suffering, income loss, and mounting medical expenses. Make sure that you fully understand your legal rights if you have been involved in an accident resulting in a back or neck injury.

Here are some of the most common back and neck injuries from accidents:

  • Back Strain: This injury occurs when the muscle fibers in the back muscles are abnormally stretched or torn. Inflammation occurs around the injured muscles and symptoms include muscle spasms, stiffness, dull aching pains, or sharp pains when making a specific movement.
  • Bulging Discs: Discs are the soft, gelatinous substance between the vertebrae of the spine. When the disc slips out of its normal position, it’s called a bulging disc. Symptoms include pain, loss of movement, and even loss of sensation. This injury usually worsens over time.
  • Herniated Discs: Commonly called a slipped or ruptured disc, this injury can cause numbness, weakness and significant pain, including sciatica. This is burning or “zinging” pain that runs down the buttocks and the legs. This injury and symptoms usually occur suddenly.
  • Lumbar Strains and Sprains: These are the most common causes of lower back pain. This soft tissue injury to the back muscles can also cause numbness, stiffness, muscle spasms, and sharp pains with certain movements. Once you have this type of injury, re-injury is very common.
  • Back Fusion Surgery: This surgery is done to link or fuse together two of the vertebrae in the spinal column. It prevents the separate movement of these vertebrae and is common when there is a problem with the disc area between the two vertebrae.
  • Disc Compression: This injury occurs when the disc in the back are compressed. There are over 50 nerves in the spinal area and disc compression causes these nerves to compress or become irritated, resulting in back pain. The injury may also cause tingling, numbness, sciatica, sharp or burning, or an inability to move normally.
  • Fractures: A spinal fracture is different from a broken arm or leg in that bone fragments may damage or pinch the spinal cord. This very serious back and neck injury requires considerable medical care, and many times will require numerous surgeries.
  • Whiplash: This injury is typically seen in motor vehicle accidents and is a result of a sudden deceleration or acceleration. The muscles of the neck and back are stretched abnormally, causing pain, numbness, and weakness. Whiplash can cause symptoms that last a lifetime and can lead to other problems with the neck and back.

If you or a loved one has one of the above injuries due to an accident caused by another party, you should contact an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
